When to Get a Second Opinion on Dental Work

Getting a second opinion is common in medicine. If you were told you needed heart surgery, you'd probably consult another cardiologist before scheduling the procedure. Dentistry should be no different, especially when you're facing expensive, complex, or irreversible treatment.

A second opinion isn't about distrusting your dentist. It's about making sure you have all the information you need to make a confident decision about your care.

When a second opinion makes sense

There are several situations where seeking another perspective is reasonable and smart.

You've been told you need extensive work

If your dentist recommends multiple crowns, extractions, implants, or a full mouth reconstruction, the scope and cost of treatment justify getting another set of eyes on the situation. Different providers may take different approaches to the same problem, and a specialist may identify options your general dentist didn't consider.

Previous dental work has failed

Crowns that keep breaking, bridges that don't fit right, implants that are causing problems, dentures that never feel comfortable. If you've had work done that hasn't held up, it's worth understanding why before investing in more of the same. A prosthodontist can evaluate what went wrong and recommend an approach that addresses the underlying issue.

You're not sure the diagnosis is right

If something about the recommended treatment doesn't sit right with you, maybe it seems too aggressive, or too conservative, or doesn't address the symptoms you're actually experiencing, trust that instinct. A second opinion either confirms the original recommendation (which gives you confidence to proceed) or identifies an alternative you hadn't considered.

You've been told nothing can be done

This is one of the most common reasons patients come to a prosthodontist. A general dentist may look at a complex case with severe bone loss, multiple failing teeth, or a collapsed bite and feel it's beyond what they can address. A prosthodontist sees these cases regularly and may have treatment options that weren't on the table before.

The treatment plan doesn't include alternatives

Good dental care involves presenting options, not a single recommendation with no discussion. If you were given one treatment plan and no alternatives, a second opinion can help you understand the full range of possibilities for your situation.

Why a prosthodontist for a second opinion?

General dentists are excellent providers for routine dental care. But for complex restorative and reconstructive work, including implants, full-arch restorations, bite reconstruction, and cosmetic transformations, a prosthodontist brings specialized training that can change the conversation entirely.

Prosthodontists complete three additional years of residency training beyond dental school, focused specifically on tooth replacement and restoration. They see the most complex cases, handle the most difficult restorations, and are trained to evaluate the mouth as an interconnected system rather than one tooth at a time.

A second opinion from a specialist doesn't mean your general dentist was wrong. It means you're getting the perspective of someone whose entire career is focused on the specific type of work you need.

What to expect at a second opinion visit

A second opinion consultation typically involves:

  • A review of your current situation. The prosthodontist examines your teeth, gums, bite, and any existing dental work. If you have X-rays or records from your primary dentist, bring them. They can save time and avoid duplicate imaging.
  • An assessment of previous work. If you're coming in because of failed or unsatisfactory dental work, the prosthodontist evaluates what was done, what went wrong, and what can be done to correct it.
  • A discussion of options. You'll receive an honest assessment of your situation along with a range of treatment options, not a single recommendation.
  • A plan you can take with you. A good second opinion gives you information you can use, regardless of where you decide to have treatment done.

You don't have to commit to anything

A second opinion is just that. You're under no obligation to proceed with treatment. The goal is to give you clarity and confidence, whether that means moving forward with a new provider, returning to your original dentist with more information, or deciding to wait.
