Same-Day Teeth: What "Teeth in a Day" Really Means
Dental Implants
September 17, 2025
If you've researched dental implants, you've probably seen the phrase "teeth in a day" or "same-day implants." The promise is straightforward: walk in with missing or failing teeth, walk out with a brand new smile in a single appointment. But what does this actually involve? And is it right for everyone?
The short answer is yes, it's real. But there's more to the process than the marketing suggests.
What "teeth in a day" actually means
Same-day teeth refers to a procedure where dental implants are placed and a set of provisional (temporary) teeth are attached to them in the same appointment. You arrive with missing or failing teeth and leave with a full set of functional teeth secured to implants.
This is most commonly associated with full-arch treatment like All-on-4, where four to six implants are placed in one jaw and a complete arch of teeth is attached immediately. The concept can also apply to single implants in certain situations where conditions allow for immediate loading.
The key word is provisional. The teeth you receive on day one are temporary. They're designed to look natural and function well enough for you to eat (soft foods at first) and speak while your implants heal. They are not your final teeth.
What happens after day one
After the implants are placed, your jawbone needs time to fuse around them, a process called osseointegration. This typically takes three to six months. During this healing period, you'll wear your provisional teeth and follow dietary guidelines that gradually expand as the implants stabilize.
Once osseointegration is complete, your prosthodontist designs and fabricates your permanent restoration. This final set of teeth is crafted with higher-grade materials, precise bite alignment, and customized aesthetics that go beyond what's possible with a provisional.
So while you do get teeth on day one, the full treatment process spans several months from start to finish.
Who qualifies for same-day teeth?
Not every patient is a candidate for immediate loading. Several factors determine whether teeth can be placed the same day as implants.
- The implants need to achieve sufficient initial stability in the bone to support provisional teeth right away. If bone quality is poor, your prosthodontist may recommend allowing the implants to heal before attaching teeth.
- Full-arch cases with four to six well-positioned implants are the most predictable scenario for same-day teeth. Single implants can sometimes be immediately loaded, but it depends on the location and bone quality.
- Conditions that affect healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking, may make a staged approach safer.
- If you have a heavy bite or grind your teeth, a staged approach may reduce the risk of complications during healing.
Your prosthodontist evaluates all of these factors during the planning phase and will recommend same-day teeth only when the conditions support a predictable outcome.
Same-day teeth vs. same-day smile
It's worth distinguishing between practices that offer true implant-supported same-day teeth and those that provide a temporary cosmetic solution, like a denture placed over healing implants without actually being attached to them. Both may be marketed as "same-day" solutions, but they're very different in terms of stability, function, and patient experience.
True same-day teeth are physically connected to the implants. They don't move, they don't require adhesive, and they allow you to function with confidence from day one. Make sure you understand exactly what's being offered when a practice advertises same-day results.
Why this requires a specialist
Same-day teeth involve both a surgical component (placing the implants with enough stability for immediate loading) and a restorative component (designing and attaching the provisional teeth that same day). This requires careful planning, precise execution, and the ability to fabricate a provisional prosthesis on-site.
A prosthodontist is specifically trained in both the surgical and restorative aspects of implant treatment. Practices with an on-site dental lab have an additional advantage: the provisional teeth can be fabricated and adjusted in real time during the procedure, rather than relying on a prefabricated template.
